Critique Groups are an important way in which we grow our craft and in which we become part of the writing and illustrating community.

How do I join a critique group?
Since there are so many critique groups in New York City, we don't keep track of them. Instead our critique group coordinator has a list of people who are interested in finding members for a critique group. To be added to that listwe ask that you answer the following questions:
1. Are you writing for PB, MG or YA?
2. Which of these venues are you looking for a critique group for?
3. Would you like to meet by going to a group or just meeting online?
4. What days or evenings are you available?
5. Where do you live and are you willing to travel?
6. Are you published in Children's literature?
7. Are you a writer, an illustrator or a writer/illustrator?
8. Are you a member of SCBWI?
Email your answers along with your Name and email address to:
critiquegroups@nyscbwi.org and ask to be added to the list. Once you find a group, please let thw coordinator know so that we can take you off the list.
In addition, try networking at the Metro-NY Chapter meetings, at SCBWI conferences, and also at classes. Don't be shy; ask around to find out if there are any critique groups that are looking for new members. Most people are very welcoming and it's a great way to meet new people and find out about events in the industry.
How do you run a critique group?
There are many different ways to run a critique group, but you might want to look at the SCBWI Publications, "Starting a Critique Group" and "The Give and Take of Critique". Both are available in the "Members Only" section of www.scbwi.org:
- Go to www.scbwi.org.
- Click the "Resource Library" image in the center or click the "Resource Library" tab on the right side of the task bar at the top.
- Click "SCBWI Publication Guide Online" in the navigation column on the left.
- Click "Getting Started: Preparing and Submitting Your Work" in the list of links on the right.
- Click "Starting a Critique Group" in the center of the page.
