Professional Series Co-Coordinator

Vicki O. Wittenstein joined the SCBWI in 1996, after first working as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan and as an advocate for issues affecting families. Her life-time love of writing and reading led to her beginning to write short stories, young adult and middle grade fiction, and articles for children’s magazines. Recently, she received her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College.

Her first book, Planet Hunter, will be published in the spring 2010 by Boyds Mills Press. Planet Hunter, a nonfiction book for middle grade readers, is about renowned astronomer and planet-hunter Geoffrey Marcy and the search for life on alien worlds.

How did Vicki become interested in writing nonfiction, especially science? "Just plain curiosity, I guess, and a fascination for learning about life and the world," Vicki says. "I love researching something I know nothing about."

Vicki was editor of the SCBWI Metro New York newsletter for three years. Now she helps arrange for speakers at the Tuesday Professional Series. "These talks are a great way to meet writers and illustrators, editors and agents, and to talk about craft. Join us!"
